Message from Marius via email:

Hey mate!

Allright so for the advantage rule... here's some of my thoughts...

Let's use the Evra Ballack incident as an example... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e55sUA1N_5A
Ballack clearly fouls Evra which is definatily a free kick. However, Rooney recieves the ball and plays a pass. Normally this would have counted as an advantage and the ref should not call a free kick. But, the ref should have stopped the play... Any injury to the head results in a stop of play. The ref clearly saw Evra go down, but probably didn't reilize it was that bad so he let the play go on. Unfortunately for Manchester, they were not able to defend against chelsea's attack without Evra and Chelsea scored. So I think the ref did an ok job on the advantage, but he should have stopped the play.

Now let's take a look at FIFA 09... From what Iv'e seen so far, if one of your teammates gets tackled but he managed to pass the ball to another teammate, the ref while usually blow the whistle unless you pass the ball within like 3-4 seconds. It's impossible to get the advantage and run through the defense cause as soon as you get to close to an opponent the ref will call the foul thinking you didn't get a good opportunity to score, but I guess the CPU underestimates my dribbling skills:D Where you are on the field obviously plays a big part in the advantage rule, in real life that is... not so much in FIFA 09. Where you are sometimes decides wheter or not you should get booked or not, but the advantage rule seem to be the same no matter where you are. Which I think needs to be fixed.

My fingers are tired... I'll let you know if I got anything else to add:)

Best of luck,
Marius

Rather than stopping play, the referee may allow the play to continue, if doing so will benefit the team against which an offence has been committed. This is known as "playing an advantage". Yeah Manchester United, really did benefit from that 'advantage' didn't they.

I think Chris foy, did see Evra get smashed in the face by Ballack, but didn't know what to do.

Firstly, Chelsea were extremely lucky with the ref's poor, very poor decision making. Even if the Ref played advantage on the Ballack ''Tackle'', which lead to Chelsea's second goal. His actions were fundamentally wrong in conjunction with the actions a ref take to signal, such decisions. When allowing 'advantage' or 'play on' the ref should raise both his hands, which he did not. You can hardly blame Rooney for taking the ball on, as he was looking at the ball the whole time up until he turned and then evra got slammed by Ballack. So the ref should of signalled 'advantage' which he didn't, so the players did not know they had the option of 'continuing' or 'stopping' for a freekick. Surely, it should be an option? if he had signalled with his hands, would something different of happened?.

The referee may "call back" play and penalise the original offence if the anticipated advantage does not ensue within a short period, typically taken to be four to five seconds. The ref for the Community shield did not wait 5 seconds, he waited 2-3 and still let play go on, even thought the advantage HAD not benefited Man United and the fact Evra was still on the floor injured, which inturn raises several other weird rules that interwine with eachother.

Even if an offence is not penalised due to advantage being played, the offender may still be sanctioned for misconduct at the next stoppage of play. Was Ballack booked? er no.

Also, they two serperate laws, which a ref should abide by, were not addressed in the Evra, Ballack incident.

allowing play to continue until the ball is out of play if a player is, in his opinion, only slightly injured

How would Chris Foy, know if he 'saw' it in the first place, he didn't give the 'advantage' signal and didn't even look at Evra after, so from about 10-15m away how would he know whether he had dived of broken his neck?

stopping the match if, in his opinion, a player is seriously injured and ensuring that he is removed from the field of play. An injured player may only return to the field of play after the match has restarted;

Why, have two seperate laws, if the red don't even look to see how badly the injury is in incidents like this.

However, if he didn't see the evra ballack incident, then this kind of excuse should be wiped out of football, it's all to easy for a ref to say, oh but i didn't see that. shocking.
